Top Ten Books I Can’t Believe I’ve Never Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday ‘s topic is actually “top ten authors I’d like to see on a reality show and which reality show,” but I don’t really watch reality tv and therefore thought my list would be rather boring. So instead I decided to go with one of the topics already done over at The Broke and the Bookish and one that will hopefully light a fire under my bottom to go and read these books ASAP.

ANYTHING by Neil Gaiman – Give me some recommendations, people. I know his awesomeness exceeds many but I have yet to witness it first hand!

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak – I see this on so many lists every week and have yet to read it!

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll– Like some friends of mine, I have a problem reading books that I own. The bf actually bought me the annotated version for Christmas, I think he is trying to tell me something...

The Iliad by Homer – How this one has escaped me I’ll never know as I have written about the Odyssey more times than I can count.

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon – Every single person who knows that I love Juliet Marillier tells me I need to read these authors. My mother bought me the first book YEARS ago and I still have yet to pick it up.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin – I am obsessed with the show and admittedly started book one and never finished. Not because it wasn’t awesome, because it was, but I had a hard time reading that one while reading others that needed to be reviewed and so forth. Summer break will be when I reinstate my love affair with Jon Snow.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides – People are always appalled that I haven’t read this one but honestly it doesn’t really appeal to me. Someone change my mind?!

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss – Another book that those I trust tell me that I would absolutely adore!

Divergent by Veronica Roth – With all the hype this one is getting I can’t believe I was not one of those bloggers counting down to book two!

Shakespeare: The World as Stage by Bill Bryson – I am a little obsessed with Shakespeare so I can’t believe that I haven’t read this one yet!

What books are you surprised that you haven’t read yet?

Top Ten Favorite Quotes From Books

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

This one was actually pretty hard for me because I LOVE quotes and literary quotes are my favorite. I decided to not include any Shakespeare or Chaucer because they would take up my entire list and tried to keep it to one or two from a favorite author/book. So, here are my top ten favorite quotes that popped into my head…

“I’m tired of being strong.” She laughed at me, laughed as if I was ridiculous. “You are what you are,” She said. – Juliet Marillier, Daughter of the Forest

“Sometimes you deal with the devil not because you want to, but because if you don't, someone else will.”Laurell K. Hamilton, Cerulean Sins

“Celia, wait,” Marco says, standing but not moving closer to her. “You are breaking my heart. You told me once that I reminded you of your father. That you never wanted to suffer the way your mother did for him, but you are doing exactly that to me. You keep leaving me. You leave me longing for you again and again when I would give anything for you to stay, and it is killing me.”
“It has to kill one of us,” Celia says quietly.” – Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone

“He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights

“...looking at him makes her feel like laughing all over - as if she could laugh not just with her mouth but with her eyes, her heart, her very limbs.” Gregory Maguire, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister

“Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?” Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls

"How blessed are some people, whose lives have no fears, no dreads; to whom sleep is a blessing that comes nightly, and brings nothing but sweet dreams.”Bram Stoker, Dracula

“Your soul sings to mine. My soul is yours, and it always will be, in any world. No matter what happens. I need you to remember that I love you.” - Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke and Bone

“How could you not know?" His voice was full of wonderment. "You changed me utterly. You were like a...like a bright, wonderful bloom in a garden full of weeds. Like a graceful capital on a page of plain script, a letter decorated with the deepest, finest colors in all Erin. Like a flame, Caitrin. Like a song.”Juliet Marillier, Hearts Blood

Books I Would Love to See Made Into Movies

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

This is obviously going to be a list of my favorite books because why wouldn’t I want to see them on the big screen? However, this list is tentatively put together as I don’t want any big names ruining one of my favorite books (I’m lookin’ at you, Beowulf!) I think if done properly these books would make fantastic movies that I would obsess over again and again.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – This story was so vibrant and sweet in so many ways, I really loved it. I hate to be one of “those” but I do think it would be enjoyable as a “Harry Potter for adults” story.

The Child Thief by Brom – An extremely dark retelling of Peter Pan, I LOVED it! They might have to scale some things down to make it not so scary and less of a horror story but I think it would be great!

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers – How could this one not be popular? It’s assassin nuns! I would be so wary to see this one because I really don’t want anything to ruin the images in my imagination but I would be curious to see the slow burn romance come to life!

Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia C. Wrede – My favorite fairy tale! I would be interested to see how this would look on the big screen especially with all of the fey elements.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostava – When I first read this book a few years ago there were rumors that film rights had been negotiated. Sadly, after some research I see that no one has gone forward with production. This book provided a new twist on the Dracula tale in a different way than the typical vampire novels or Dracula in Love and it made me remember all the reasons I loved Dracula growing up.

The Black Swan by Mercedes Lackey – Ahh one of my favorites from my tender teen years, I can’t say why this book stuck with me so much after all these years but I love it. It’s a retelling of a popular fairy tale but it is also somewhat dark in a way and I think it would be very popular if done well.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr – I LOVED the world building in this one I think it could be really interesting to show the duality between the real world and the sort of “in between” that Bek travels to.

Frankenstein and/or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - I know these have been done but I would love to see a remake. When I think of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I think about the first scene in Van Helsing where he is chasing him through the bell tower and it just makes me wonder why it hasn't been done! Maybe this is really more of a want for a Van Helsing two...hmm

Wicked by Gregory Maguire - Even though I have seen the Broadway play four times - yes, FOUR times - I would still love to see this as a movie! I wouldn't argue having Idinia and Kristen reprise their roles on the big screen either!

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion – Cheating a bit at this one I know since it is already post production but I am so excited for it. I loved this book immensely more than I thought I would and was surprised to find myself having a crush on a zombie!

That's it from me this week, what is on your Top Ten Tuesday?

Top Ten Favorite Book Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

Ack! This one was really exciting! Here we go..

Severus Snape (Harry Potter series) – I really don’t think I need to even explain this one, do I? From book one I loved how evil Snape was but I couldn’t help but wonder if there was more to him than just a vengeful attitude toward Harry because of his hatred toward James. When he killed Dumbledore I think I had serious heart palpitations I was so confused “He’s REALLY evil??!! Really?!?!” Then the epic conclusion came and all the secrets were let out. “After all this time, Severus?” “Always.”

Hermione Granger (Harry Potter series) – Yes, I am allowed to have two favorite characters from one book on this list thankyouverymuch, just be happy it isn’t my top ten Harry Potter characters instead because it very well could be!! Bottom line: Hermione is kick ass. She is smart, brave and one of my favorite heroines of all time.

Anita Blake (Anita Blake series) – She’s a BAMF! She is an empowering woman in literature, sure sometimes she freaks out over “feelings” and “emotions” get in the way but usually she is hardcore and does what needs to be done. I envy her bravery and defiance and maybe her personal relationships a tiny bit as well.

Princess Cimorene (The Enchanted Forest Chronicles) - I have loved these books for as long as I can remember. Cimorene is a no-nonsense princess. She escapes her castle life because she hates being a princess and chooses to live with DRAGONS instead. How awesome is she? I love her so much I begged the bf to let me name one of our kittens after her. He put his foot down and we instead named them Cordelia and Celia, both literary, Shakespearean even (methinks the joke is on him!)

Rosie (Water for Elephants) – I loved this book and that darling elephant sure took the cake for my favorite character in the book. Her final act? Epic.

Miss Havisham (Great Expectations) – This character always intrigued me. Looking back I am somewhat annoyed and want to tell her to take a shower, get a healthcare plan and move on with her life but as a teen I always wanted more of her story. Plus I recently heard that Helena Bonham Carter is playing her in a new adaptation of the story. Perfectttt!

Clodagh (Heir to Sevenwaters) – I should probably be honest and say that though I chose Clodagh as my favorite Juliet Marillier character (because how can I not have her on a top ten list) it was hard to pick just one out of all the amazing female leads in these novels. They are strong and hardworking and I really loved every one.

Bigby Wolf (Fables) – He is so the male lead I always fall for in my novels. He is big and bad and totally in love with Snow White. How can I not love him?

Dracula (Dracula) – He is so sad! I am going to forget about the whole murderous part and just pretend that I could be his friend and wean him off human blood onto things like celery and maybe bugs or something less gross.

Seraphina Dombegh (Seraphina) – She is a new love of mine but I found her to be so intricately awesome that I couldn’t leave her off the list.

Top Ten Books That Were Totally Deceiving

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostava - This was more of a title deception, I was not interested at all in the book based on its title or cover. Thankfully I read the blurb because it turned out to be a pretty awesome Dracula rewrite!

Sunshine by Robin McKinley - I picked this book up because a friend told me how amazing it was, I still remember him handing it to me and me thinking how boring it looked because the cover was not at all intriguing.

Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer - Honestly still not really sure what she was doing there. Metaphors I guess? Not impressed, Ms. Meyer.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett - I wouldn't have picked this book up based on its cover, it's definitely a beautiful cover but didn't draw me in as others have.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor - I hesitated picking this book up for a long time, the cover was strange and I didn't really like it. After reading the book I do have to say that though it was one of my FAVORITE books this year and its basically amazing, the cover is still a little confusing to me.

Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia C. Wrede - The "newer" version of this book is downright ugly. I LOVE this story and the older cover was pretty and old fashioned and reminiscent of fairy tales.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater - I had no idea that this book was about werewolves when I first saw the cover. I understand the whole mystery aspect but I really wasn't drawn in. Ironically, I didn't really enjoy the story much either.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Being a librarian I saw this book waaaayy before it became popular (I actually cataloged the library's first copy) and I remember thinking how bland the cover seemed. After reading the story I can see how things fit but it was definitely a book I was pleasantly surprised by after getting past the cover!

Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay - This cover has nothing at all to do with the story!! I assume the cover is to show Juliet's conflict by brooding near the sea and so forth but really she wears jeans the whole time and doesn't go near the water at all. Even more confusing is the cover to the sequel, Romeo Redeemed. Granted I am only half way through but so far there have been no trysts near the beach..

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - I have read A LOT of opinions about the cover of this book. People are so annoyed/confused because they don't understand why Mara is drowning in some random body of water in a really cute dress. I like to think its a metaphor for her "drowning" in her thoughts/anxieties and Noah is metaphorically pulling her out of the abyss. However, upon seeing this cover I didn't expect a paranormal romance but some sort of murder mystery type of book.

Top 10 Books To Read in a Day

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at
The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

Ack! I am a failure today and can only think of eight, I think this means I have been reading books that are too long! :]

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede – This series is one I still pick up when I want a quick read I know I love.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum – Any books from this series really, they are whimsical and fun so they make me happy.

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – I can’t really choose a favorite though since this is strictly “to read in a day” I would have to go with one of the first 3 books because then the books get extremely long!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Though I honestly don’t know if I will ever read these again (I didn’t love them) they were still very entertaining and I breezed through all three.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman - What is better than The Princess Bride? Nothing! The film adaptation is also my "sick movie" that I watch whenver I am feeling down. It's totes "wuv, twu wuv" forever.

Fables by Bill Willingham – Okay these are not books they are graphic novels and therefore I read through them in about 30 minutes but I still love them enough to know that I will want to finish them in one sitting.

Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris – Not prize winning writing but these are short and fun books that I breeze through and enjoy reading.

Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton – This series is what I call my guilty pleasure; they are quick reads with a lot of action so they are read rather quickly.

Top Ten Books On My Spring To-Be-Read list

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

To be released this Spring:

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened - By Jenny Lawson (aka TheBloggess) Some of you may already follow Jenny’s blog and know that she is hilarious. I find myself laughing out loud at her tweets on a daily basis and I can only sympathize with poor Victor yet feel a little jealous that he gets to take part in Jenny’s adventures. I am highly anticipating this book and I am sure it will make me furiously happy.

Storybound By Marissa Burt - This one is on my challenge list for “debut author challenge” and the blurb reminds me of Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu so I can only hope it lives up to my expectations.

The Selection By Kiera Cass - Gorgeous cover and one of my top anticipated reads of 2012.

Of Poseidon By Anna Banks - A "fish out of water story" that I hope changes my mind regarding "mermaid" reads. Also, Goodreads doesn't have any information about it being a series and that makes me SO happy. I am eager to read some standalone novels.

Blackbirds By Chuck Wendig - This one has been on a few of my top ten posts, it looks amazing by all standards.

Already released books that I am anticipating reading this Spring:

Harbinger By Sara Wilson Etienne - Another one on my "debut author challenge" list.

The Fault in Our Stars By John Green - Reading this one for book club on April 3, I have heard great things so I am pretty excited!

Scarlet By A. C. Gaughen - A Robin Hood retelling? Yes please!

Out of Oz By Gregory Maguire - I am hoping to read this in the Spring though I think I want to go back and at least read Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men first so I am not sure if I will get to them!

A Game of Thrones By George R. R. Martin: I had hoped to read at least the first three books before April 1 but I don't see that happening. In a nutshell: I NEED TO FINISH THIS SERIES!!!

That's it for me, what's on your Top Ten this week?

Top Ten Favorite Book Covers

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

I am totally one of those people who first judges a book by its cover. I KNOW you shouldn’t, don’t lecture ME, I’m a librarian! Since I am prone to doing this I have a million covers that I just LOVE, so this list wasn’t too hard to make. I chose to pick books that jumped out at me at the bookstore and/or library to narrow it down a little more.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr – This was the first book by Melissa Marr that I ever read, I knew who she was but I’m not too in love with “fae” stories so I had never picked up a book by Marr. As soon as I saw this cover while working in tech processing (best. job. ever.) I knew I had to read it.

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier – I know you are probably sick of me raving about how AWESOME this author is but I remember being in the bookstore with my grandmother probably 10 years ago and this book just jumped out at me. The cover is beautiful though not as detailed as her other books such as Wildwood Dancing.

The Gates of Sleep by Mercedes Lackey – It’s hard to say what made me fall for this book at first sight, it’s colorful, mysterious and intricate all at the same time.

Fables by Bill Willingham – How could I possibly have a post about book covers without mentioning Willingham’s work? I love, love, love these graphic novels so much that I own a book dedicated solely to its cover artwork! I don’t have the words to express how much I love the artwork in these books, I want to poster it all over my walls.

Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey – I have yet to read this book but as soon as I saw the cover I knew I had to add it to my TBR pile. I’m not sure why the fad now in book covers is girls floating in some creepy way but I like it.

Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig – How cool is this cover? It only uses three colors yet it somehow manages to be so vibrant and eye catching I can’t wait to pick it up!

Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey – Again with the random floating girl above water and again I find it intriguing enough to want to read it immediately.

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman – I love the colors (or lack of) on this book cover. The whole illustration is absolutely beautiful and it’s one of the main reasons I wanted to read this book so badly. (Note: I am reading it right now and it is GOOD!)

Draw the Dark by Ilsa Bick – This cover is CREEPY!! I love scary books and this cover makes me scared before even reading the blurb!

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs – All I kept thinking of before reading this book was: “why is that creepy little girl FLOATING alone in a forest looking straight into my soul,” and “Where is her coat, shouldn’t she be freezing?” Then you turn the book over and forget about it creepiest pictures ever!

What are your favorite book covers?

Top Ten Books I'd Give A Theme Song To

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

I only made it to nine this week..I am ashamed but also overtired/overthinking this post which is not okay, so here they are:

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini TaylorSomebody That I Used to Know by Gotye it’s obvious that not every part of every song will relate to a book in its entirety but there are many parts of this song that remind me of this story and the relationship between Karou and Akiva. “But that was love and it's an ache I still remember, you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness like resignation to the end…”

Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier – Basically anything by Loreena Mckennitt, the few songs that come to mind are Cymbeline, Courtyard Lullaby and Samain Night. Mckennitt sings Celtic music and Marillier’s books are based on different folklore, the Sevenwaters series being specifically Celtic lore. The songs and Mckennitt’s voice are absolutely breathtaking.

The Night Circus by Erin MorgensternTime is Running Out by Muse, Part of the lyrics are: “I wanted freedom, bound and restricted. I tried to give you up but I'm addicted,” I think this is a perfect song for the relationship between Marco and Celia.

Eclipse by Stephenie MeyerStab My Back by The All-American Rejects I think this song title explains itself but while I was reading this book it was all I could think of, the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob was a huge part of this story and that’s what the song represents as well.

Anita Blake series by Laurell K. HamiltonBad Reputation by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts because though Anita does have a sensitive side that she shows to a select few she is a BAMF and doesn’t care what people think/say about her.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer – By Myself by Linkin Park I think this song encompasses Mara’s feeling of helplessness and confusion over everything going on in her life. “I can’t hold on to what I want when I’m stretched so thin it’s all too much to take in. I can’t hold on to anything watching everything spin with thoughts of failure sinking in..”

The Child Thief by BromClocks by Coldplay I think this song was stuck in my head for this book because it was on the album for the newest Peter Pan movie. However it is still fitting to this story especially the lyrics “Am I part of the cure? Or am I part of the disease?”

The Black SwanAll Around Me by Flyleaf this song represents the relationship between Odile and her father though I know its usually interpreted as a romantic song the lyrics are fitting to their relationship as well. All Odile wants is love and acceptance from her father but instead he takes her power and suffocates her completely.

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. WredeFairytale by Sara Bareilles Though the song is more about relationships I think it is fitting to Cimorene’s character and her lack of conformity as a typical princess. “Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom man made up a story said that I should believe him. Go and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight, but I don't want the next best thing.”

What theme songs did you come up with this week?

Top Ten Books I'd Quickly Save If My House Was Going To Be Abducted By Aliens

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

This is seriously like Sophie’s Choice for me and I keep changing the list over and over because how could I only save just 10?? Also I would totally grab my Nook as well, which holds way more than 10 books. Cheating, I know!! I tried to put books on my list that had some sort of sentimental value because if I really HAD to choose I would probably grab my antique books and get outta there! However that would make for a boring top ten so…

The Norton Shakespeare – Not only is this a complete collection of Shakespeare’s works it is also filled with TONS of my notes from my multiple college courses and I would cry if I ever lost them.

The Black Swan By Mercedes Lackey – One of my first YA books I read as a youngin’ and my copy is so worn out it is literally falling apart.

Harry Potter – This book got me through a lot of hard times as a child, I’ve read it so many times I lost count.

Oz Story Magazine – I obtained this through a Wizard of Oz fan club I belonged to as a child, and it’s signed by John R. Neill!

The Wizard of Oz - My favorite as you all know!

The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe

The Hobbit - A first edition copy that was my great grandfathers.

A Child’s Book of Stories – An anthology I received as a child that contains my favorite story, Snow White and Rose Red.

Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier – My favorite book by my favorite author.

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Top Ten Books That Broke Your Heart A Little

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish which I adore and therefore chose to adopt into my weekly blog posts!

We are going anti-Valentine's Day today!! Even making this list made me a little sad! Keep in mind many of the reasons behind why these books broke my heart contain spoilers so read at your own risk!!

A Monster Calls
by Patrick Ness – This book was beautiful and it had me bawling like a baby near the end.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – This book was heart wrenching and from the moment Kishmish died I was heartbroken yet elated at the same time. Then the ending happened and the longing only increased!

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling – I remember reading the part where Sirius died and I was so heartbroken I just kept reading it over and over hoping I had made some mistake. Then in the last book when Hedwig dies I was shocked and hurt and ANGRY with those Death Eaters!! I vowed to get REVENGE, in the form of continuous reading, of course! To make a long story short: when Ron freaks out and leaves Harry and Hermione, Lupin and Tonks die (and Tonks was PREGNANT!!) and then the epic-ness that was the death of Severus Snape, oh my…I’m still not over it…

The Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier – There are multiple parts in all 6 books that break my heart every time I read them. Marillier is my favorite author and I think it is in part because she is able to break the heart in both good and bad ways and then mend it again when you thought it wasn’t possible to do so.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – This book was beautiful in a heart breaking way. Though the ending wasn’t specifically sad, it still broke my heart.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – This book is a wonderful and entertaining love story but the ending was so sad!

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks – I don’t think I have to explain this one. I don’t love Nicholas Sparks but the dude has a knack for heart breaking!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – I’ve only read book one and SPOILER ALERT Rue dies!! More importantly, at the end where Peeta believes Katniss was acting like she only loved him for “show” oh man I was screaming at her to just be honest, dammit!!
